<image:caption>The Victorian traveller Isabella Bird visited Mianzhu in the 1890s and described “a beautiful modern bridge over a branch of the Fou, of six stone arches, a fine roof, iron balustrades, and a central roofed tower”. The Jiying Bridge (积英桥) dates to 1881, part of a wider programme of flood-proofing infrastructure instigated by Sichuanese governor Ding Baozhen. Because of subsidence along the river bank two extra arches were added in the 1990s.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On the left (永鎮家宅) is a typically ugly, fierce image of Zhong Kui with bat and sword; the qin (Chinese zither) slung across his back reflects his cultured achievements. On the right (趙公鎮宅) is Zhao Gongming and his tiger protecting a clutch of chicks; this is based on a nineteenth-century painting in the Mianzhu woodblock museum. The Chinese characters 鎮(家)宅 identify the two rubbings as protective talismans for the home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On the left “Long-lived as Heaven, with Plentiful Emoluments” (壽天百祿). “Deer” in Chinese sounds similar to the word for an official’s salary, hence is a stand-in for wealth and position; the peach represents longevity; and the pomegranate the boy is holding represents abundant offspring. On the right, “A Prosperous Promotion” (得祿榮陞). Again, the deer across the rear servant’s shoulders is wordplay for “Official’s Salary”, while the books hanging from the carrypole reflect deep learning. “On horseback” coloquially means “coming quickly”. Both blocks marked 綿邑雲鶴齋發, ”Published by the Yunhe Studio, Mianyi”.</image:caption>

According to Cory Willmott, whose grandparents worked with Phelps, “Missionaries played a crucial role in capturing and transferring pandas to North American and European zoos. When a missionary had succeeded in capturing a baby panda, they would live in someone’s backyard on the WCUU campus until their transport was arranged.” Photo by permission of Cory Willmott</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inside Brophy’s Boxing tent. All a bit blurry for some reason, most likely to do with a bottle of rum. I was standing on a plank across two oil drums, between a drunk farmhand holding himself upright by grabbing onto my neck and happily slurring his life’s wisdom at me (“You know mate, there’s more to all this than just beer”), and a tiny female army sergeant screaming “hit him, hit him!” every time the two boxers got within range of each other. Fun times!</image:caption>
